A guided family tabletop adventure

Become the heroes of a story only your family can tell.

Parents and children explore magical worlds together, make the choices that shape the tale, and quietly build real emotional and social skills along the way. Whether you are new to tabletop adventures or a seasoned player, everyone is welcome, and the first story is simple enough for the app to guide anyone through it.

What is this?

An adventure you build together, one choice at a time.

Whether you have run a hundred campaigns or have never rolled a die in your life, this is built to welcome you. Here is the whole idea.

1

One person becomes the Guide

Usually a parent. The app hands the Guide the story and the very words to bring the world to life, with no prep and no rulebook to study first.

2

Everyone else creates a Hero

Choose a ready-made hero or invent your own, give them a name, and step into the tall grass together.

3

The app guides, the Heroes shape the way

The app provides a complete, step-by-step guide for managing every scene, while giving players full freedom to imagine, talk, and choose how their heroes respond.

4

Sometimes you roll the dice

When the outcome is uncertain, you roll, and what happens next belongs to your table and no one else's.

Put it together and your family creates an adventure that is genuinely yours: a story no one else will ever play quite the same way.

Every roll moves the story

There is no “nothing happens.”

Roll two ordinary dice and add one of five Approaches (Might, Wits, Heart, Spark, or Grace) to see where the story turns. Even a miss opens a new path, so nobody hits a dead end and nobody gets left behind.

Triumph
You succeed with style: a bonus, a discovery, or new momentum.
Success
You do exactly what you set out to do.
Success with a Cost
You do it, but something complicates, and the story leans in.
Setback
It doesn't work this time, and the situation shifts, opening a new way.

Choose who you become

Five heroes, five ways to be brave.

Each hero is capable in a different way, so every kind of player has a moment to shine. Pick one to start, or make your own.

Tamsin, a sturdy young hero with an amber scarf, standing steady in the tall glowing grass of the Whispering Reach.Might
Tamsin

The strong, steady one who stands in front. Kind-strong, not tough.

Fennick, a curious young hero with a blue scarf, holding a hand-drawn map in the tall grass of the Whispering Reach.Wits
Fennick

The listener and map-maker, who notices the wrong note no one else caught.

Bramble, a gentle young hero with a green scarf, at ease with small wild creatures in the tall grass of the Whispering Reach.Heart
Bramble

The one animals trust. Quiet, warm, and braver than they look.

Pib, a bright young hero with a violet scarf, holding a handmade contraption in the tall grass of the Whispering Reach.Spark
Pib

The inventor with a plan for everything, half of which actually work.

Rue, a brave young hero with an orange scarf, reaching out a hand in the tall grass of the Whispering Reach.Grace
Rue

The quick, brave one who always finds another way through. Never leaves anyone behind.

Approachable by design

Easy to start, whether or not you have played before.

The first adventure is a doorway, not a test: gentle enough for a family that has never touched a tabletop game, and still a real, satisfying adventure for anyone who has played for years. It teaches itself as you go.

  • No tabletop experience required, for anyone at the table.
  • No giant rulebook. The one core action fits on a single card.
  • The Guide is supported at every step, never left to improvise alone.
  • Rules arrive gently, introduced only at the moment they matter.
  • Grown-ups and children play together, side by side in the same story.
  • A system designed to grow with your family as you are ready.

The thinking behind the play

There is a reason it is built this way.

Good play can quietly build real skills. Four research-supported ideas shape how the adventure is designed, and every one of them stays invisible at the table.

Aesthetic distance

A safe step away

Children open up far more easily through a character than about themselves. Facing a worry, a frustration, or a fear as a hero puts a gentle, safe distance between the child and the feeling, which makes it easier to explore, and easier to master.

Research basis: Clarke et al., 2019.

The bleed effect

From the story into life

What happens in a story does not stay there. Courage found as a hero, patience held in a hard moment, a problem solved by pausing to think. These carry home. Play becomes a low-stakes rehearsal space for the real thing.

Research basis: Hugaas, 2022.

Agency & reparative play

Every choice is theirs

Children who feel powerless are helped most by real agency. Here the choices genuinely belong to the Hero, and a missed roll is never a dead end, only a prompt to try another way. Kids practice deciding, recovering, and trying again.

Research basis: Femia, 2023.

Secure attachment

Closer, not apart

This is not a child alone with a screen. With a parent as Guide and the child as Hero, the whole thing is shared imaginative play (the grown-up, adult-supported version of make-believe), which strengthens warmth, trust, and open conversation.

Research basis: Bowlby, 1988; Kapitany et al., 2022.

Honest about the evidence. These are research-supported principles that inform the design, the same ideas clinicians draw on when they use storytelling and role-play with children. They are not a claim about this product. Song of the Whispering Reach has not itself been studied in a clinical trial, and it is a family adventure, not therapy: it does not diagnose, treat, or cure any condition, and it is not a substitute for professional care. Curiosity & Creative Problem-Solving

Two layers, one adventure

The child sees a story. The parent sees the architecture.

This is the heart of the design. A child at the table is simply playing. The grown-up running the game sees a second, quieter layer underneath it.

The adventure

What the Hero experiences

An extraordinary world to explore. Characters worth caring about. Real choices, and the consequences that follow. Dice, discovery, and a story that is theirs.

That is all it needs to be, and it is more than enough.

The support

What the Guide receives

Alongside the same story, the app quietly offers the parent:

  • Questions worth asking
  • Moments to slow down and explore
  • Gentle suggestions for how to respond
  • Optional conversation prompts
  • Guidance for adapting to different ages
  • Help when the story goes somewhere unexpected

We are not trying to trick anyone. Good play simply creates natural openings for connection and growth, so you can meet those moments without ever stopping the adventure to explain the point.

The beginning of something bigger

The first adventure

Song of the Whispering Reach

A lost giant, a singing grassland, and a race against the storm to guide a great migration home.

You live in the Whispering Reach: a sea of grass taller than you that glows at night like an ocean of little stars. Once a year the great mossbacks, gentle tortoises as big as hills, cross the Whispering Reach on their long journey home. This year, one young mossback has fallen behind.

  • The Whispering Reach

A world you explore by ear: wind in the grass, ancient stones that sing, and glow-paths that only appear after dark.

  • The great migration

Hundreds of gentle giants crossing together, humming songs you feel in your chest, with an autumn storm closing the path behind them.

  • Lolo

A frightened young mossback, far from the herd. Its wobbly little hum sounds like "lo, lo." Calm it, and it just might become your family's own.

  • A quiet mystery

The more you travel, the stranger things become. Signs point the wrong way. Places that should sing fall silent. Something out here is not the way it should be.

Lolo, a young mossback: a gentle giant tortoise with a garden of moss and flowers growing across its great domed shell, in the glowing grass of the Whispering Reach.
Lolo: The lost mossback at the heart of the first adventure.

Close your eyes. The Whispering Reach is waiting.

Why we are building this

A game made by a family, for families.

Moo Cow Games began at our own kitchen table.

Dr. Emily Zehrer is a board-certified child and adolescent psychiatrist, and she co-writes the adventures with her husband. In her clinical work she kept seeing the same thing: children process big feelings and build resilience far more readily through lived, imaginative experience than through worksheets. She wanted families to be able to reach for some of that at home, not as therapy but as play worth asking for again, so she began co-writing the stories with him.

Her husband, Mike, co-writes the adventures, designs complex systems, builds with technology, and illustrates the world of the Whispering Reach. Together they set out to turn principles they trust into an adventure their own children would beg to play, and to make it welcoming enough that any parent can be the Guide.

And the name? That belongs to Mac, the family's bernedoodle puppy, better known around the house as Mackey Moo Cow. He is the reason nobody here ever sits still for very long, which felt like exactly the right spirit for a company that makes families get up and play together.

That is the whole aim: something genuinely fun first, with a great deal of thought built in underneath.
